Purpose

Supporting Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) Connections

Overview

Queensland's transmission network is undergoing significant investment to support the integration of renewable energy and strengthen long-term network reliability. As part of a major substation upgrade program in South East Queensland, Tyree supplied transmission-grade power transformers that help facilitate the connection of Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) and support the growing needs of the electricity network.

The Challenge

As transmission networks adapt to accommodate increasing levels of renewable generation, utilities require transformer solutions that deliver:

  • Reliable performance in critical transmission applications

  • Locally manufactured content to ensure the security of the asset's performance without risk from overseas influence

  • Long-term operational reliability and asset resilience

Support for network expansion and renewable energy integration

Tyree’s Solution

Drawing on decades of transformer engineering and manufacturing expertise, Tyree supplied two transmission-grade 5MVA, 132kV/11kV power transformers engineered specifically for the project's requirements.

The scope included engineering, manufacturing, type testing, supply, on-site assembly, testing and pre-commissioning, ensuring a fully integrated delivery approach from factory through to energisation.

Delivering

  • A trusted supply chain

  • Australian manufacturing

  • Local engineering support

  • Long-term asset security

Scope of Supply

  • Two (2) 5MVA, 132kV/11kV transmission-grade power transformers

  • Engineered to project specifications

  • Manufactured and type tested by Tyree

  • On-site assembly and installation support

  • Field testing and pre-commissioning services

The Outcome

The new transformers replaced and added to existing Tyree units that had served Queensland's transmission network for more than 45 years. Their long service life demonstrates the durability and reliability of Australian-manufactured transformer solutions and reinforces the value of sovereign capability in supporting critical grid infrastructure.

The upgrade forms part of a broader transmission network investment program facilitating Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) connections across South East Queensland, supporting a stronger, more resilient and future-ready electricity network.
