Overview

The Orana Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a landmark project supporting NSW's transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy future. As one of Australia's largest grid-scale battery projects, Orana will enable greater integration of renewable energy while strengthening network reliability and energy security.

The Challenge

Battery storage projects continue to grow in size and complexity. This means developers require transformer solutions that deliver:

  • Reliable grid integration of inverter-based energy systems

  • High-efficiency performance under dynamic operating conditions

  • Compliance with Australian grid and network requirements

  • Long-term reliability and resilience of critical energy infrastructure

Tyree’s Solution

As a key project partner, Tyree supplied Australian-designed and manufactured inverter transformers for the Orana BESS, applying decades of experience in transformer engineering and manufacturing to meet the technical demands of a large-scale battery energy storage project.

Scope of Supply

  • Quantity of (116), 4.6MVA, 33kV BESS Inverter Transformers

  • Designed and Manufactured in Australia

  • Factory Testing and Quality Assurance

  • On site support for Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage application

The Outcome

Tyree's inverter transformer solution supports the reliable connection of the battery system to the transmission network, helping deliver one of Australia's largest battery energy storage projects. Following successful commissioning, the Orana BESS achieved full operational output and commenced commercial operation.
