Overview
On a development the substation is specified by a consultant, procured by a builder and connected by the network authority. It has to fit a footprint someone else drew, satisfy three sets of requirements and be ready for handover. Tyree engineers to all three.
What developments need from their electrical supply
The footprint is fixed before the equipment is chosen. Basements, plant rooms and street-facing kiosks are drawn early, and a standard enclosure that does not fit means either a redesign or a variation. On developments, custom footprints are the norm rather than the exception.
Three parties have to be satisfied. The consultant’s specification, the network authority’s connection requirements and the builder’s program rarely align on their own, and reconciling them is usually the slowest part of the electrical package.
Then there is appearance and access. Street-facing equipment carries aesthetic and acoustic conditions, and maintenance access has to be designed in rather than negotiated after handover.
