About Tyree Group
Our Story
A visionary engineer and industry dynamo founded Tyree in 1946. Sir William “Bill” Tyree disrupted the industry by out-engineering entrenched overseas competition, and at one point, became the largest manufacturer in the Southern Hemisphere.
In 1970, a global powerhouse recognised Tyree’s technical superiority, which led to Westinghouse acquiring portions of Tyree's operations and validating Tyree’s unparalleled engineering quality.
This would later set the stage for Tyree to re-emerge in the transformer industry, stronger and more specialised.
Today, we continue to incorporate these global quality standards and solid engineering foundations into locally designed transformers.
Our solutions are built on the industry’s most respected round-coil architecture, a design pedigree that has powered global infrastructure for over a century.
Once a best kept secret, Tyree has grown from a quiet industry staple into a dominant market player. We are currently executing a landmark expansion of our Mittagong operations, supported by the NSW Government’s Net Zero Manufacturing initiative. Tyree is the backbone of Australia’s renewables and grid modernisation, with the sovereign capability to match.
More than just a supplier, we reinvest 50% of our profits through the Tyree Foundation for medical and engineering research. It’s always been about the people. We don’t proclaim purpose-driven leadership. We embody it.

Through the Sir William Tyree Scholarships, we support regional and Indigenous engineering students who may not otherwise have access to the same opportunities. This program reflects Sir William’s belief in education as a foundation for a better future.
Our Reconciliation Action Plan is underway in the reflection stage, where we are deepening our understanding and strengthening our connection with First Nations communities. This work is an important part of how we continue to grow as an organisation.
We support Indigenous participation through our registration with Supply Nation, ensuring more of our procurement benefits Indigenous owned businesses.
We maintain long term relationships with NDIS providers, helping create better outcomes for people living with disability and the organisations that support them.
Our engagement with local high schools and career development programs helps us encourage young people to explore engineering, trades and future career pathways.
We continue to build industry capability through our Apprenticeship Program, where we aim for at least ten percent of our production workforce to be apprentices.
Our commitment to inclusion means we actively encourage participation from women, older Australians and people from diverse backgrounds across our workforce.
We support ongoing learning and development through structured employee programs that help our people grow their skills and progress their careers.
Our partnership with Mates reflects our commitment to mental health and wellbeing across our sites.
