Tyree Transformers recently supplied a next generation kiosk substation, designed for seamless operation in an electricity distribution network. This advanced substation is now in operation within a real-world power distribution system while also serving as a valuable learning tool in an educational environment.
This 11kV kiosk substation is installed at the Australian Power Quality Research Centre (APQRC) within the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus.
The 1000kVA, 11kV kiosk distribution substation features a number of innovations including;
- Australia’s first installed SF6 free RMAirset Medium Voltage Ring Main Unit applied in an electrical utility kiosk application.
- The transformer is K rated being natural ester filled for elimination of transformer fire risk.
- A voltage regulating distribution transformer (VRDT) for active voltage control of the LV distribution network and is fitted with SCADA and remote communication capability to allow integration into the electricity network operators Automated Distribution Management System (ADMS).
- A type tested low voltage switch panel
- An external housing which includes Tyree’s type tested Internal Arc Contained Kiosk arrangement with integral oil bunding.

These advanced features are an integration of modern and mature technology without compromise, demonstrating a sustainable path for the responsible development of network assets for the future.
