About Us

Originally established in 1946 by Sir William Tyree, the Tyree brand has become synonymous with transformer and cable manufacture throughout Australasia and beyond.

The Tyree Group is proud to be fully Australian owned. The Group is uniquely structured as up to 50% of our retained profits are distributed annually to charity through the Tyree Foundation whose primary purpose is the ongoing support of education and research in the fields of engineering & medicine. The balance of the Group retained profits are retained for strategic reinvestment into the growth of the Tyree businesses for capital investment and product innovation, rather than distributed to private shareholders as dividends.

Our board of directors oversee the governance of the Tyree businesses to ensure sustainability, growth and regulatory compliance of our operations. At Tyree Transformers we operate as a ‘can-do’ business that is fully committed to providing high quality products and highly responsive services to our customers wherever they operate.

Tyree Transformers is fully committed to Australian manufacturing and the creation of local employment, with manufacturing and distribution facilities strategically located within Australia and New Zealand.

Headquartered at Mittagong in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales is just an hour south of Sydney. Tyree Transformers has easy access to major transport corridors and is well situated and equipped to service customers within the Australasian region. The headquarters were originally built on a green fields site and designed with potential expansion in mind. Over the years the factories have evolved into state-of-the-art facilities that are not only equipped to meet current customer requirements but also can be continually expanded to service the future growth demands – being “future ready”.

A constant theme within the various iterations of the company for over 70 years has been continuous improvement and innovation – always looking for a better way. The company was an early adopter of quality management and originally gained accreditation to AS/NZS ISO 9001 in 1990, in addition the business management systems are certified to AS4801 for Safety and ISO14001 for Environmental Management. In-house testing, product prototyping and product development, in conjunction with customers and key academic institutions, has helped the company to remain focused on innovative solutions and leading-edge initiatives to improve competitiveness and provide customer solutions.

On-going investment in information technology such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), CADCAM manufacturing, manufacturing robotics, fully integrated Enterprise & Manufacturing Resource Planning and Web Enabled Infrastructure ensures that all functional areas within the business are equipped to maintain and improve supply chain integrity, cost control and customer service. Significant investment in automation, including robotics, has been made in the production area to maintain quality and improve capacity availability.

Strategic alignment with key supply chain providers has resulted in consistent, reliable competitive sourcing of materials from global leaders in transformer materials. Suppliers are actively encouraged to contribute to product improvement and suggest creative approaches to improving product performance.

Tyree maintains active membership of relevant industry associations and groups including the Australian Industry Group, EESA and CIGRE
